Privacy Policy

Budgeting is a household budgeting app operated by Maxx Helfer ("we," "us," "our"). This policy explains what information the app collects, why, who it's shared with, and how you can have it deleted.

Information we collect

Financial account data, via Plaid: account balances, transactions, institution names, and spending categories for bank accounts you choose to connect. We never see or store your bank username or password — connecting an account happens through Plaid Link, which hands us a token, not your credentials.
Account and authentication data: your name and email as provided by Sign in with Apple. We do not have or store a password for your account, since authentication is handled entirely by Apple.
Household data: your display name, household membership, budgets you set, and categories/notes you add to transactions.

We do not collect Social Security numbers, card numbers, your bank credentials, or government ID numbers, and we do not use trackers or analytics SDKs that follow you across other apps or websites.

How we use this information

Solely to provide the app's own functionality: showing your linked accounts and balances, categorizing and displaying your transactions, and tracking budgets you set against them. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it.

Plaid's own privacy policy, linked above, governs how Plaid itself handles data once it's shared with us. We don't share your data with anyone else, and we don't sell it.

Data retention and your ability to delete it

You can disconnect any linked bank at any time from within the app. This immediately and permanently deletes that bank's accounts and transactions from our database.
Leaving or deleting your household removes your membership, and if no one is left in the household, deletes the household and its data with it.
Short of that, your data is retained for as long as your account and household exist, so the app can keep working across sessions.

Security

Financial account data is encrypted at rest, and all traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Details of the specific controls in place are documented in our Information Security Policy, available on request.

Children's privacy

Budgeting is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If how we collect, use, or share data changes materially, we'll update this policy and change the "Last reviewed" date above. This policy is reviewed at least once a year regardless of whether anything changed.
